The Practice of Machine Translation in the Enhancement of English Reading Comprehension in Multicultural Environments

Machine learning technology provides new learning tools for English learners in a multicultural context, helping learners to better understand and absorb English information. In this paper, we designed and built an online English translation platform with neural machine translation algorithms, and applied it to school A to conduct a special English reading comprehension course teaching experiment. The teaching effect of the platform is evaluated through pre- and post-tests and satisfaction surveys. And combined with the regression equation, we analyze the effect of this paper’s platform on reading comprehension ability. The convergence effect of Loss value and Bleu value of this paper’s model on the training set and the test set is consistent, and the convergence is completed at about 20-30 rounds of iteration. After using this paper’s platform, there is a significant difference between the English reading comprehension ability of the students in the experimental group and the control group, and the difference between the posterior side scores of the two classes is 8.22. The students’ satisfaction ratings of the accuracy and fluency, semantic similarity, quality of translation, and discourse coherence of the translations on this paper’s platform range from 4.232 to 4.316. A one-unit increase in the performance of this paper’s platform can correspondingly raise students’ English reading comprehension by 0.199 at the 0.001 level.
