Introduction

Germany is the birthplace of Romantic literature, which began at the end of the 18th century and quickly became a sweeping literary movement and trend of literary thought, spreading to England, France, Russia and other countries. In Western countries, Romanticism is a notable intellectual movement, from its birth to the late, early German Romanticism has gone through different stages of development, in which the word “romantic” has long been often placed in the popular interpretation [13]. But in the literary field of embodiment, the early German romanticism from the birth of the later went through different stages of development, the early romantic representative characters desire for eternity, the pursuit of the absolute as the German romantic spirit of the provisions of the spirit of nature, such as, Goethe and Schiller and others. In them, the question of the value and meaning of human existence was raised and pursued, and formed one of the spiritual tendencies that stretches to the present day [46].

In On the Romantics, Heine said in a contemptuous tone that the Romantics were a group of narrowminded and closed-minded literati, and although this generalization of bias and emotional expression is a bit biased, from the point of view of the creations of the early German Romantic writers, many of their works adopted the technique of writing in a subtle way to refer to all kinds of misfortunes in the reality, did not avoid the contradiction between the reality and the ideals, and also demonstrated a strong individual life The will of individual life is also shown [79].

With the background of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Romantic movement fiercely condemned the alienation of the relationship between man and nature and the serious damage to the natural environment caused by industrial civilization [1012]. In the opinion of Rousseau, the “father of romanticism”, “the innovation and development of science and art did not contribute to the improvement of social morality, and science and art attributed their rise to our depravity”. Rousseau’s critique of industrial civilization and his advocacy of “return to nature” ignited the spark of European Romanticism, which further ignited and reached its peak in Germany. Isaiah Berlin argues that Romanticism “is of the greatest importance, because nothing so revolutionary has ever happened since, and its full meaning and importance has not been recognized even today, and the Romantic movement has transformed modern ethics and politics far more profoundly than we realize” [1315]. In particular, the mutual fit between the organic and holistic view of nature and ecological ethical thought therein has laid the ideological foundation for the occurrence and development of modern ecological ethics [1617].

This study analyzes the ethical consciousness composition of literary ecology from the perspective of historical development, and conducts an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, constitutive influences, and ecological principles of literary ecology, exploring literary ecological social influences and consciousness generation. And based on the western historical background, the representative German Romantic literary authors are selected as the entry point to study the literary ecological embodiment of early German Romantic works. On this basis, the regression model is used to analyze the impact of information technology assistance on the development of Romantic literature in terms of communication and audience. Finally, the development of Romantic literature and the theoretical expansion of Romantic literature with the aid of information technology are studied.

German Romanticism in a literary-ecological perspective
Analysis of the ethical composition of the literary ecology

The ethical consciousness of literary ecology is shown in Figure 1. Literary ecology refers to the literature that examines and expresses the relationship between nature and human beings, explores the social roots of ecological crises, and engages in and expresses unique ecological aesthetics based on the ideological foundation of ecological holism and the supreme value of the interests of the ecosystem as a whole. Its prominent features are ecological responsibility, cultural criticism, ecological ideal, ecological warning and ecological aesthetics, which not only have their own characteristics in terms of ideology, but also have their unique aesthetic purposes, aesthetic concepts, aesthetic characteristics and aesthetic methods in terms of aesthetics and art. Among them, the ecological aesthetics of ecocriticism has four major principles, namely the principle of naturalness, the principle of wholeness, the principle of integration, and the principle of inter-subjectivity. The main task of eco-literature is to take the ecological concept of wholeness, connection and harmony as its guiding ideology, and to use literary works as a medium for ideological and cultural critique, so as to excavate and reveal the ideological and cultural roots of the ecological crisis and to promote the ideological and cultural change of mankind.

Figure 1.

The ethical consciousness of literary ecology

In the process of historical evolution and complexity of human society, the relationship between human and nature has shown a less optimistic development trend, and various crises have forced thoughts to reflect on the direction of culture and history. Air pollution, the destruction of the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, the sharp decline in species diversity, and other manifestations of the imbalance of the earth and environmental degradation are hints of the existential crisis of mankind as a living species. At the same time, the emergence of social and cultural crises in the areas of ethics, morality, concepts and beliefs reminds us of the deeper foundations of the relationship between human beings and nature in the course of civilization. From the unity of heaven and man in the totemic period, to the ethnic identity in the religious century, to the individuality in the scientific era, the estrangement of man from nature and the estrangement of man from man are only two results of a single process. Conversely, it may be the alienation of man from nature that leads to the alienation of man from nature. Therefore, ecological literature is about discovering and rediscovering the relationship between man and nature, and it is inevitably the beginning of cultural reflection in the era of post-materialist civilization. Literary ecology explores the laws of existence of nature as a whole, including human beings, organic and inorganic matter, and in particular the laws of ecological development that point to adaptation, evolution, and interconnectedness. In the scientific discourse of literary ecology, human beings and their behavior do not have a special value meaning, although they have historically had a special significance. Literature records the way of life of the times and is an important constructor of ecological patterns of behavior. Ecological literature has also become a key to understanding literature that reflects on the development of a material civilization that is reproduced. Historically, the ideology and ethics of eco-literature have simply developed in tandem with the environmental literature of the age of material civilization. Revisiting the central focus of human cultural, economic, and religious beliefs in the context of ecological literature necessitates an experimental world of possibilities and worldviews in literature. The original purpose of eco-literature is to provide literary criticism with a discursive space in which it can release its own energy.

Literary ecological analysis of the German Romantics

The Romantic cultural movement was the first cultural movement in the history of Western literature to criticize industrial civilization and depict man and nature. Under the influence of the Enlightenment and the Classical Movement, Romantic writers, on the one hand, continued to explore Christian doctrine and constantly disseminated the connotations and true meaning of post-neo-secularized spiritual life. On the other hand, faced with the drastic transformation of agricultural culture into industrial culture, they created a large number of literary classics that transcended time and regions in just a few decades. The Romantics promote emotion and imagination, pursue inspiration and passion, yearn for nature, return to nature and sense nature, and seek a natural personality that is perfect, harmonious and serene in nature, the spiritual mentor and soul home of mankind.

The research in this paper is oriented towards German Romanticism, interpreting and analyzing representative German Romantic writers and their works, and analyzing the ecological revelation in German Romantic literature. As far as Germany is concerned, German ecological literature has been branded with the mark of the times, especially the two world wars and the adverse effects on the environment caused by the development of science, technology and industry, which made the ecological literary works of this period reach an unprecedented height and depth in terms of content, thought and expression.

Goethe is one of the most important representatives of German romantic literature. This great German writer demonstrated the connection between all things in nature in a poetic world that is clear, pure, and full. Goethe emphasized in Poetry and Truth: “I believe that in nature, whether animate or inanimate, whether soulful or soulless, there is something that is always in contradiction and therefore cannot be expressed in concepts, much less in words.” The “something” is in fact the mysterious nature. Everything in nature interacts and influences each other, and this operation helps to maintain the beauty of the community of life and contributes to the harmony and stability of the ecosystem.

Novalis was the most important thinker and writer of the early German Romanticism, and the “blue flower” is a common symbol and typical symbol of Romantic literature. His works contain a strong color of “inner nature”. He compared the universe to the “macrocosmic man” and the man to the “microcosmic universe”, just as the human state of mind is a small world, the world is a big state of mind. Because the human state of mind is connected to the “world state of mind”, the human heart can be regarded as a mirror. He believed that the only way to understand the “source of analogy” of all things in the universe is to go into the heart of a human being in order to find the organ of understanding the world. Modern man is precisely forgetting his own heart, tired of chasing after external things, not only does he not know the world, but also the materialization and objectification of the world, which has turned the living organism into a usable material.

Eichendorff, as an important representative writer of German romantic literature, places the main character under the beautiful natural scenery, takes roaming as the theme and the pursuit of love as the red thread, and connects the whole story into an organic whole. Especially the large amount of nature writing and copying played a key role in the formation of a perfect natural personality of an artistic youth during their roaming and growing process. From the perspective of ecological aesthetics, it is also different from other Romantic works of the same time, because the writers in the creative process of natural aesthetics, not like some Romantic writers, who readily objectify or instrumentalize nature, and regard the aesthetic object of nature as a dichotomous object, which becomes a tool for expressing, manifesting, comparing, implying and symbolizing the inner world and personality characteristics of human beings, but abandon the dualistic view of the subject’s dichotomy and antagonism. Instead, it rejects the dualistic view of subject dichotomy and always pursues an ecological concept of equality and harmony in the process of nature writing.

In general, the ecological aesthetic spirit of early German Romanticism is inseparable from the concept of “nature”. The ecological embodiment of German Romanticism is shown in Figure 2. In German Romanticism, nature has multiple meanings; it is influenced by social ideology, social environment and development, and is the antithesis of primitive state of existence and civilization; it also has the connotation of divinity, which brings richer knowledge than rationality, and at the same time it is also the tutor of art and beauty, which constitute the basis for the formation of the natural personality. Then, through art forms, nature is melted into human nature, influencing and inspiring man as an individual, so that human emotions become more in line with natural nature, and become a bridge between nature and the human mind. Therefore, the ecological spiritual quality of Romanticism is to express human emotions freely, focus on human intuitive sensitivity, advocate enthusiasm and curiosity for the world, and endeavor to apply the wisdom gained from nature creatively to human practical activities, and cultivate a perfect natural personality and moral sentiment.

Information technology-based study of the ecology of Romantic literature
The Impact of Information Technology on the Development of Romantic Literature

The development of information technology and the renewal of the media have led to dramatic changes in literature. In an ontological sense, the media model of computer networks has brought about a fundamental change in the way literature exists. Under the dual influence of information technology and the law of literary development, the mode of operation, development trend, and presentation of literature have undergone significant changes. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of information technology on the development of Romantic literary communication.

Analysis of the impact of information technology on the effectiveness of literary communication

Information technology has enhanced and expanded the communication forms and contents of Romanticism and literary thought, and the network communication environment has expanded the means and carriers of literary communication. With the advantages of fast speed, rich content, and other communication advantages, new media has developed into the most important channel for people to obtain information. Therefore, this paper first researches the communication effect of Romantic literature based on information technology. The independent variable studied in this paper is information technology, and according to the actual situation of Romantic literature dissemination, the information technology is divided into three dimensions of the time of use, exposure to literary content, and information technology dissemination methods to construct, and put forward the following hypotheses:

Length of Internet use is significantly and positively correlated with the effect of Romantic literature dissemination.

There is a significant positive correlation between exposure to literary content and the effect of literary dissemination.

The reading level is significantly positively correlated with the dissemination effect of Romantic literature.

This study was conducted through a questionnaire survey combined with Internet data for data collection and organization, the research finally returned 895 questionnaires, the effective questionnaire was 856, the questionnaire validity rate was 95.6%. In the reliability test of the questionnaire, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to examine the consistency and stability of the questionnaire, and the internal consistency coefficient of the questionnaire’s subscales was 0.8470.886, which was greater than 0.8, indicating that the questionnaire’s reliability was more satisfactory and reached the standard of administering the test.

The variables studied in this paper are the length of Internet use, exposure to cultural content, reading degree and the dissemination effect of Romantic literature, and the correlation analysis results of each variable are shown in Table 1. There is a significant correlation between the length of use, exposure to cultural content, reading degree, quality of literary creation and dissemination effect, with correlation coefficients of 0.185, 0.235 and 0.266 respectively, and P is less than 0.001, and there is a significant positive correlation between the variables. It can be seen that the correlations existing between the variables are in line with the theoretical expectations of this study, indicating that it is suitable for subsequent regression analysis.

Cultural contact 0.123** 1
Reading degree 0.256*** 0.354*** 1
Propagation effect 0.185*** 0.235*** 0.266*** 1

In order to explore the predicting and being predicted relationship between variables, the study conducted multiple linear regression analysis by taking the effect of Romantic literature dissemination as the dependent variable, the length of Internet use, cultural content exposure, and reading level as the independent variables, and gender, work, age, and education level as the control variables, and the regression results of the model are shown in Table 2. The length of Internet use is significantly positively correlated with the dissemination effect of Romantic literature (P<0.001), with a regression coefficient of 0.162. At the same time, the exposure to cultural content and the degree of reading are significantly positively correlated with the dissemination effect of Romantic literature (P<0.001), with regression coefficients of 0.215 and 0.220, respectively, which indicates that the deeper the length of Internet use, the more profound the exposure to cultural content and the deeper the degree of reading, the more the dissemination effect of Romantic literature will be enhanced. Romantic literature dissemination will be enhanced, and hypotheses H1, H2, and H3 are valid.

Research on the impact of literary communication based on audience analysis

The audiences of Romantic literature are individuals with differences, and they are biased towards being attracted to the content of their preferred medium. The social context is likely to influence the audience’s media and content preferences, so this paper analyzes the impact of Romantic literature communication through audience analysis. Based on the “expectation-confirmation” model, this paper takes perceived usefulness, satisfaction, expectation confirmation, and willingness to read consistently as research variables, and proposes the following hypotheses:

Readers’ perceived usefulness of Romantic literature positively and significantly affects readers’ willingness to continue reading.

Readers’ perceived usefulness of Romantic literature positively and significantly affects readers’ satisfaction.

Readers’ expectation of confirmation of Romantic literary works positively and significantly affects readers’ perceived usefulness.

Readers’ Confirmation of Romantic Literary Works positively and significantly affects readers’ satisfaction.

Readers’ satisfaction with romantic literary works positively and significantly affects readers’ willingness to continue reading.

The results of the correlation analysis between the variables are shown in Table 3, and according to the correlation results, it can be seen that there is a significant correlation between each variable (P < 0.01). Specific analysis shows that the correlation between expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness and satisfaction is 0.608 and 0.702 respectively, which is a moderate correlation. The correlation between satisfaction and willingness to continue reading is 0.411, and the correlation with perceived usefulness is 0.657. It can be seen that the five hypothesized variables proposed in this paper are all moderately correlated with each other, and the five hypotheses have been preliminarily confirmed, and each pair of independent variables and the dependent variable are linearly correlated with each other.

Correlation analysis results between variables

Variable Continued reading will Expected confirmation Satisfaction Perceptual usefulness
Continued reading will 1
Expected confirmation 0.453** 1
Satisfaction 0.411** 0.702** 1
Perceptual usefulness 0.511** 0.608** 0.657** 1

In order to further explore the relationship between perceived usefulness, the degree of expectation confirmation and satisfaction and the intention to continue reading romantic literature, this paper will use stepwise regression analysis to exclude the possibility of multiple covariance, and the regression results based on the audience analysis are shown in Table 4. Expectation Confirmation and Perceived Usefulness VIF value is 1, and there is no multicollinearity problem between them. The R2 for testing whether the two variables of expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness conformed to the pattern of regression analysis was 0.368, indicating that expectation confirmation explained 36.8% of perceived usefulness. The statistic F of the regression model explaining the variance by itself is 208.608, and the corresponding probability of significance is less than 0.001. It indicates that the overall effect of the final regression model reaches the expected level of significance. The value of the regression coefficient for expectation confirmation is 0.467 (T = 15.123, p < 0.001), implying that expectation confirmation will have a significant positive impact relationship on perceived usefulness. Expectation Confirmation of Romantic Literature will have a significant positive influence relationship on Perceived Usefulness. The coefficient of determination (R2) between expectation confirmation, perceived usefulness, and satisfaction is 0.580, which means that the variables expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness explain 58.0% of satisfaction. Expectation Confirmation, Perceived Usefulness will have a significant positive influence relationship on satisfaction. In addition, the coefficient of determination R2 of the regression analysis model of perceived usefulness and satisfaction on the willingness to continue reading is 0.205, which means that perceived usefulness, and satisfaction can explain the reason for the 20.5% change in the willingness to continue reading. And the model passed the F-test (F = 46.352, p < 0.001), which means that the model is valid. The value of regression coefficient of perceived usefulness is 0.405, and the value of regression coefficient of satisfaction is 0.339, which means that perceived usefulness and satisfaction will have a significant positive influence relationship on the willingness to continue reading. To sum up, it can be observed that hypotheses H4, H5, H6, H7 and H7 are valid.

Theoretical Expansion of Romantic Literary Ecology from the Perspective of Information Technology

Information technology has a significant impact on the development and dissemination of Romanticism literature, as well as on the literary ecological connotation of Romanticism. Literary ecology is an ecological reflection influenced by social ideology, social environment and development, and with the development of the times, the information age also gives it new values and connotations, enriching and expanding the theoretical embodiment of literary ecology.

In a sense, literary ecology is the environment in which literature grows, which recognizes the literary environment from a sociological point of view. Literary ecology is borrowing the term of natural environment to illustrate the literary survival environment, which contains many aspects, such as the social and cultural evaluation system of literary occurrence and development, the literary market, the external factors such as the readers’ reading interest, and the main body of creation and criticism. The expansion of literary ecology under information technology can be seen in Fig. 3. With the assistance of information technology, the expansion of Romanticism’s literary ecology is mainly reflected in various aspects such as creation methods, dissemination channels, creative content, ecological theories, and cultural development.

Figure 3.

Information technology is extended below

The rapid development of information technology and the gradual entry of human beings into the age of intelligence and enjoyment of various conveniences brought about by science and technology have affected the subjective conditions for the producers of Romantic literature to create under such a general environment. The creator’s life experience relies more on indirect experience in the electronic media era, because the Internet is fast and complete, and it is more convenient for the creative subject to obtain indirect experience. The literature dissemination environment in the era of electronic media has the characteristics of popularization and extensiveness, which makes the form of literature dissemination richer and more vivid, and can meet the needs of different readers. Electronic media has injected new vitality into literary communication, and literary producers use digital media to promote their literary works and attract more people to participate in literary communication. On the other hand, the assistance of information technology has increased literary productivity and lowered the threshold of literary dissemination, expanding literary production and consumption from a niche to the masses and leading to the massification of literary subjects’ involvement and participation in literary activities.

From the perspective of the expansion of the theory of literary ecology, writers have always been one of the most sensitive groups in the face of any social crisis. With the development of the times, literary ecology still plays a pioneering role in saving the global ecological crisis. It is also the literary ecology, which is full of warnings and forward-looking significance, that has issued the first voice of ecological concern. Although the global ecological crisis is the most direct and intrinsic reason for the occurrence of ecocriticism, it is the writers who awakened to the ecological problems earlier who provided the important basic texts for ecocriticism. In terms of the development of literary ecocritics theory, the promotion, review, and study of literary ecological works constitute the practical dimension and an important part of the theory system of ecocriticism. Therefore, the study of the practice of literary criticism under the ecological perspective is undoubtedly an important component of the study of the generation of the theoretical form of ecocriticism. Ecocriticism theory is the foundation of literary ecocriticism, and the perfection or otherwise of its theoretical form directly determines the theoretical direction and development level of ecological literary criticism. In addition to its own ecological critical function, the important role of ecocritical theory is to discuss and improve the theoretical basis, spiritual resources, critical principles, critical methods and other basic issues that guide the practice of ecological literary criticism. The innovative eco-literature, literary ecology, eco-aesthetics, and other eco-criticism theories have become a beautiful landscape in the process of literary ecological development.

Conclusion

This paper studies the literary ecology of German Romanticism works from the perspective of historical development, and uses regression analysis to study the impact of information technology assistance on the development of Romanticism literary ecology, summarizing the evolution and expansion of Romanticism literature in the information age.

In this study, the length of Internet use, exposure to cultural content, reading level and the effect of Romanticism literature dissemination were studied as variables, and the correlation coefficients of each variable were 0.185, 0.235 and 0.266, respectively, and P was less than 0.001, which was significant positive correlation between each variable. Meanwhile, the regression coefficients in the regression analysis of the length of Internet use, cultural content exposure, and reading degree with the dissemination effect of Romantic literature are 0.162, 0.215, and 0.220, respectively, which verifies the hypothesis that the length of Internet use, cultural content exposure, and reading degree will have a significant positive correlation with the dissemination effect of Romantic literature, and also implies that information technology assisted can enhance the Romantic literary ecological dissemination effect.

From the perspective of audience analysis, the correlation between expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness and satisfaction is 0.608 and 0.702 respectively, which is a moderate correlation. The correlation between satisfaction and willingness to continue reading is 0.411, and the correlation with perceived usefulness is 0.657. The regression coefficients of expectation confirmation, perceived usefulness and satisfaction are 0.467, 0.405 and 0.339, indicating that the increase of expectation confirmation, perceived usefulness and satisfaction will increase the readers’ willingness to continue to read Romantic literature, which also reflects the readers’ requirements for the development of Romantic literature in the current era, and provides a basis for the development and creation of Romantic literature.
