Student work in colleges and universities is an important part of higher education. This paper takes the input-output efficiency of students’ work in higher education as the research perspective, and utilizes the data envelopment analysis method to evaluate the efficiency of students’ work in colleges and universities directly under the Ministry of Education on the basis of constructing the evaluation index system of input-output efficiency of students’ work in colleges and universities. Three-year panel data from colleges and universities directly under the Ministry of Education are selected to conduct empirical research on the input-output efficiency of student work in colleges and universities. The DEA-Malmquist productivity index model is used for empirical analysis to provide theoretical support and feasible suggestions for improving the input-output efficiency of student work in colleges and universities. The main conclusions of the study are as follows: the efficiency values of combination 1 (student scale efficiency) and combination 2 (student quality efficiency) are similar, indicating that there is a large relationship between the scale and quality of student work training in colleges and universities. Combination 3 (scientific research results) shows a significant difference from combinations 1 and 2, suggesting that some colleges and universities have lower student work cultivation scale and quality, but higher scientific research efficiency. It shows that student work in colleges and universities should pay attention to the efficiency of the scale, quality and scientific research results of student cultivation, and adjust the ratio of the three in time to optimize the student management work in order to realize the fundamental task of moral education and talent cultivation in Colleges and universities.
